Crotalus viridis (Common names: prairie rattlesnake, western rattlesnake, plains rattlesnake, and others) is a venomous pit viper species native to the western United States, southwestern Canada, and northern Mexico. Western rattlesnakes live on the land, but it can sometimes climb in trees or bushes. Acer macrophyllum, the bigleaf maple, is a large deciduous tree in the maple genus. The scenery is better than the lower trail.

The western gray squirrel (Sciurus griseus) is an arboreal rodent found along the western coast of the United States and Mexico. No joy. As is typical of bird-eating raptors, peregrine falcons are sexually dimorphic, females being considerably larger than males.The peregrine is renowned for its speed, reaching over 320 km/h (200 mph) during its characteristic hunting stoop (high speed dive),making it the fastest member of the animal kingdom.     The monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus) is a milkweed butterfly (subfamily Danainae) in the family Nymphalidae. It was 20 years in the planning and lobbying, but now its open.     The American coot (Fulica americana), also known as a mud hen, is a bird of the family Rallidae. They are usually not aggressive toward humans unless humans attempt to feed or interact with coyotes.     The northern trailhead can be accessed from the San Gabriel River Parkway in Pico Rivera.
